However, there are many contact lenses to choose from and it can be difficult to know which ones are right for you.
This is why you need a contact lens assessment which involves a detailed examination of your eyes performed by our optometrists.
During the appointment, your overall eye health will be assessed to determine whether it is suitable for you to wear contacts.
This is put down to whether your eyes can tolerate wearing contact lenses for an extended period and whether any underlying conditions may affect the outcome.
If you are approved for contact lens wear, you will be given instructions on how to care for your eyes so that they remain healthy whilst wearing them.
The Different Types of Contact Lenses
Contact lenses are a great way to improve your vision but there are many different types, each with a different feature suitable for your needs.
First, there are soft contact lenses which are known for being extremely comfortable and easy to handle, making them ideal for those who need to wear contacts daily.
However, not everyone is a candidate for soft contact lenses as they are not suitable for people with dry eyes or extreme sensitivity to the lens solution.
The next type of contact lens is the Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) which is a type of hard lens made from ridged plastic making them more durable than soft lenses.
They are especially good at treating conditions such as myopia as they allow oxygen to pass through them to keep the cornea healthy and help provide the patient with superior vision.
However, if you are looking for contact lenses that combine the best of both worlds, hybrid lenses are your best bet.
They are a combination of hard and soft surfaces, giving you the comfort and flexibility of soft lenses with some of the visual clarity provided by their hard counterparts.
Aftercare and Advice
When wearing contact lenses, you must take good care of them and use proper hygiene practices when removing them from your eye.
For example, lenses should be cleaned and stored in a special solution provided by our optometrists when not in use.
You should also wash your hands before and after handling contact lenses and never touch your eyes with fingers that have not been cleaned.
Also never reuse old solutions when storing your lenses as this can cause infections, damage the lenses, and even cause permanent damage to your eyesight if left untreated.
Lastly, never wear contact lenses after the expiry date on the packaging as this tells you how long the product will last, suggesting when you need to get new ones.
